Even though I’m a huuuuuge moviegeek, watched a total of 72 movies in 2017 alone and have written in-depth movie reviews in the past, I have been hesitant to share movie reviews here on HQ. I really want to go back to reviewing movies, but before doing so I want to share an explanation on how I watch and review movies.
I followed a Japanese Film course when I was still a student at Leiden University years ago. I haven’t followed other film related courses nor read up on the art of making movies. Without that deeper knowledge you could say I’m a mere popcorn reviewer, but it also means I’m not a movie snob and probably closer to all the other regular people who spend their hard earned cash on watching a movie in the cinema or buy/rent movies to view them at home.
I’ve never been a fan of downloading movies illegally and watch most of my movies via Netflix, Pathé Thuis and the iTunes Store. I also have a Pathé Unlimited Gold subscription, which lets me catch all the new releases in the cinema for a fixed monthly price. Simply perfect!
So what are the things that I find important when enjoying a movie ?
The most important thing for me to even consider watching a movie is its plot. I don’t mind if a story isn’t super original. I’m always curious on how classic stories are retold an how ancient themes are incorporated in new movies.
Character Depth & Growth
Even though one dimensional characters can be handy at times, I love it when characters are layered and conflicted. I also enjoy seeing a character grow during a movie. I know, I know… there is a whole Hero’s journey template for this, but I seriously can’t get enough of it.
Being a gamer, I don’t mind if movies incorporate CGI. Of course, I’m still critical when CGI breaks immersion and seems cheap. I also enjoy well choreographed action sequences. I also keep an eye on how the mood is being set in a movie with the use of set pieces, locations, costumes and music.
I don’t like to grade a movie, because setting up a solid grading system is actually quite complicated. I do like to mention if a movie is simply a must see and must be enjoyed on the big screen or if you can totally ignore it, based on the things I noticed while watching it.
Ok, so I think this about covers it. If you have additional questions about the way I watch and review movies, feel free to leave a comment below and I will get back to you!
