With lockdown due to COVID-19 still in place, kicking off a new year doesn’t feel the same as it used to. Not knowing if lockdown will be prolonged, if a third wave will be even worse than the first two, if one of the vaccines will really work, and if we ever go back to the office… with that much uncertainty it’s difficult to look forward to all the awesome movies, binge-worthy shows & epic videogames that are planned for a release in 2021. But, today I’m going to give it a try and share what I’m looking forward to the most!
I love watching movies on the big screen, but the cinema’s are still closed in The Netherlands. I have to admit even though I would love to support my local cinema, I’m still not very comfortable with the idea of sitting in a cinema hall for almost 2 hours. With our current TV setup I don’t mind movies debuting via a streaming service. I really enjoyed watching Soul via Disney+ for example.
Unfortunately we don’t have access to HBO Max. I already had to miss out on Wonder Woman 1984 last year and will also be missing out on Godzilla vs. Kong. Movies I had hoped to watch on release day. Fortunately Dune and Matrix 4 are scheduled for a release in Q4 this year, so I hope I will be still be able to watch both safely on the big screen.
I’ve always considered myself more of a moviegeek than someone who is totally into binge-watching TV series. Last year I found out I’m a bigger fan of TV shows than I thought. I somehow couldn’t sit down for a 2-hour movie, but could easily watch multiple episodes of a TV show. This year I’ve already wrapped up Bridgerton and ZeroZeroZero. I’m currently on a nostalgia trip rewatching episodes of Dawson’s Creek on Netflix. Haha when it comes to genres, I’m really all over the place.
I’m looking forward to the second season of The Witcher. During the year I will shop around the various streaming services to check out fresh TV shows or go on nostalgic trips and catch up on stuff I’ve been missing out on.
To be honest, I don’t expect much of 2021 when it comes to gaming. I currently don’t see any reason to pick up a PlayStation 5. The console is not only sold out most of the time, but there are also no PlayStation 5 exclusive games that I find interesting. The PlayStation Plus Collection sounds cute, but for me who has owned a PlayStation since the first gen, I have no interest in playing the classics again on a brand-new machine.
I would love to purchase a PlayStation 5 bundle with Horizon Forbidden West or God of War Ragnarök, but both games do not even have an official release date at this time. Since the only I thing I can do is wait, I realised I’m also totally fine with waiting even longer for a sweet black PlayStation 5 bundle and more next-gen exclusive titles. This could mean I might not even bother upgrading to a PS5 in 2021.
In the Summer of 2020 I finally decided to pick up a Nintendo Switch and got hooked on Animal Crossing: New Horizons. I still casually play the game and do my daily rounds on Sorbet Bay. This year I plan on using my Nintendo Switch for exclusive titles and pick up fun titles I missed out on such as Sayonara Wild Hearts. Of course that doesn’t mean I don’t want to enjoy some next-gen magic. In December I picked up an Xbox Series S with a digital copy of Cyberpunk 2077. Even with the bugs the game didn’t run as bad as I expected. I recently finished the game and will share my thougths in an upcoming blogpost.
I’m usually not a fan of subscription services for games. I still decided to go for Game Pass Ultimate because of the epic catalogue of games. The first 3 months of the service costs only 1,00 EUR. That’s an offer I simply couldn’t refuse! In 2021 I will definitely be enjoying the titles from the Game Pass Ultimate catalogue while keeping an eye on my PlayStation wishlist.
I might be playing the waiting game when it comes to picking up a PlayStation 5, but I’m definitely picking up the Mass Effect Legendary Edition this year. I have no interest in replaying the classics from the PlayStation Plus Collection, but a remastered Mass Effect trilogy is just too awesome to skip. I’m super excited to dive back into the adventure with Commander Shepard! I will also be picking up End of Dragons which will be the third expansion of Guild Wars 2.
Needless to say I will be spending more time here at NERDSHOCK HQ. Before kicking off the New Year I’ve decided to do a deep cleanse of my Twitterfeed. In 2021 I really want to be more mindful about what I’m posting on social media and actually share more in-depth posts, play sessions and audio updates straight via HQ.
Be sure to stay tuned!
