Ever since Guerrilla announced Horizon Forbidden West last year, I’ve been eager to learn more about this upcoming game for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. In the latest State of Play we finally get to see some amazing gameplay footage and learn about some new elements in the game. Had to share some quick thoughts.
The game sure looks good on PlayStation 5. I love the lush environments of the Forbidden West. I’m also happy to see new enemy types such as the Clawstrider and Tremortusk. I’m definitely picking up an artbook as soon as it’s available. The music is beautiful and truly enhances the game experience, but I did find it a tad overwhelming during the fight sequences. I understand there always needs to be a certain level of anxiety and tension during a fight, but I do wonder how dynamic the music will be in the full game. Especially when it comes to the contrast between various moments in the game.
The developers of Final Fantasy VII REMAKE really had some great thoughts about dynamic music which was perfectly executed in the game. I’ve added the Inside Final Fantasy VII Remake episode below for reference. It’s a great watch. Don’t forget to turn on the subtitles.
I enjoyed the closer look at Aloy’s new tools during the gameplay deep dive. The Focus Scanner highlighting spots that allow free climbing is so helpful. Can’t wait to explore the Forbidden West using the Pullcaster, Shieldwing and Diving Mask. Did they just say we can stay under water for as long as we like? Sweet! I also can’t wait to try out the weapons and finish off enemies with some great combo’s.
At this time no release date has been announced, but it seems the game is still planned for a release in 2021. I would love to be able to pick up a PlayStation 5 together with Horizon Forbidden West on release day. But with all the shortages going on, I’m afraid I won’t be able to do so. I might just pick up the PlayStation 4 version of the game, so I can dive into the adventure right away. I could also end up waiting for a bundle to become widely available and enjoy the game in 2022 *shivers* Needless to say I will keep a close eye on Horizon Forbidden West and share my thoughts on fresh news here on NERDSHOCK HQ.
