I’ve been quite wishy washy when it comes to NERDSHOCK HQ. Originally launched at the start of 2013, HQ went from an independent lifestyle blog to a static hub to a simple landing page. I always wanted to do an overhaul of the main website, but a busy job kept me away. When I finally did find the time to work on HQ, I fell gravely ill.

Hospitalized & Crohn’s Disease

In November 2022 I ended up in the hospital due to a perforated colon and abdominal sepsis. It turns out I had undiagnosed Crohn’s disease which finally caused serious trouble. During an emergency surgery part of my colon was removed and I was given an ileostomy. After the surgery things got pretty close, but I managed to pull through.

The doctors woke me up on the third day after the surgery. I spend the following two weeks on the ICU and another week at the nursing ward, before I was allowed to leave the hospital. During my stay at the ICU I had lost a lot of muscle mass and strength. I started physiotherapy during my stay at the ICU, but I still felt pretty weak when they transferred me to the nursing ward. Because I still couldn’t do a lot of things on my own, staying at the nursing ward felt stressful. I was happy to go home.

I found myself back at the hospital on New Year’s Day due to acute pancreatitis. I again had to stay at the hospital for another two weeks. Being back at the hospital was definitely a blow to my self esteem. Things were going extremely well and I didn’t feel ill until New Year’s Eve. I felt very relieved when I learned there was no blockage and my ileostomy was doing great. Because I was in better shape, my second stay at the nursing ward felt way less stressful. I even enjoyed the food a whole lot more.

I spend the whole of 2023 focusing on healing and getting used to my new reality. I’m feeling a whole lot better in 2024, but recently still had to make a trip to the ER and spend a night in the hospital due to a stomach bug. It sucks to be on immunosuppressants, but the alternative of having my immune system attack healthy cells and tissues by mistake.. yeah not so good.

Back Online

I do feel like I’m ready to move on from only focusing on healing and living day by day. I hope to rejoin the workforce later this year. For now I’m bringing NERDSHOCK HQ back online. I’m still busy setting things up around here. Be sure to check back in soon for fresh updates!

Love,
Aleida
